Getting control of how we spend our time is one of the greatest things we can do to eliminate stress and pursue our dreams. One tool that can be extremely helpful is a time map. Just imagine an extremely organized closet – the shoes, sweaters, coats, clothes are all in their proper place. When you get something new, if there isn’t room on a shelf, something has to be removed in order to fit the new item. A time map will help you organize your time in a similar way. A time map is simply a chart showing each day of the week starting from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep.

When you download the time map (or use your calendar system), for one week, list everything you currently do. From watching TV, talking on the phone, when you wake up, your commute to work, time spent on Facebook…list everything for one week. You will see a snapshot of your life and whether it is out of balance or not.

After you see where your time is being spent, it’s time to fill out a time map based on your priorities and responsibilities. When you write out your to do lists, always assign a time to do them. From time to pay bills, do the laundry, mow the yard, read a book, learn a new skill, grocery shopping, prayer time, etc…assign a time to do them. When you get all the things you need to do out of your head on paper (or digital calendar), you have taken a big step toward managing your time and life. Focus on what is most important including pursuing your dreams and goals!
